Sustainability

At the Rimrock Resort Hotel, we recognize and respect our responsibility to preserve our environment, locally and globally. We have developed several sustainability programs to reduce, reuse and recycle wherever possible—from energy-efficient lighting and water conservation systems to naturalized landscaping and an extensive recycling program. We encourage all of our staff and guests to help us preserve our environment by participating in our Green Program.

Green Key Eco-Rating Program

Since 2011, we have partnered with the Green Key Eco-Rating Program. Under this program, we conduct an extensive self-audit each year. The annual audit helps us determine the green program’s strengths and weaknesses and sets an action plan for the future. In 2023, we achieved a rating of 4 Green Keys from Green Key Global, meaning the Rimrock “has shown national industry leadership and commitment to protecting the environment through wide-ranging policies and practices.”

Recent Environmental Wins

The following are some recent environmental initiatives we proudly offer our guests and staff.

  • The Rimrock Banff proudly stands as one of the pioneering hotels in Canada to join forces with ecoSpirits, championing the cause of reducing carbon footprints. By addressing the issue of single-use glass within the global spirits and wine industry, ecoSpirits introduces a revolutionary circular economy technology, effectively minimizing packaging waste along the supply chain with its innovative low carbon, low waste system – a global first.
  • Hotels for Trees is a pioneering initiative where every guest who passes on housekeeping services not only helps conserve water and reduce chemical usage, but a tree will also be planted. By partnering with reforestation projects, Hotels for Trees ensures that each stay leaves a lasting positive impact on the environment, creating a greener future for generations to come.
  • Hotel-wide food compost program implemented in 2022. From September 2022 to January 2023, we saved 44,400 kg of compostable waste going to our landfills.
  • Installation of a top-of-the-line Business Maintenance System, which controls lighting, heating and cooling of all rooms via a computer. This allows us to monitor and regulate power usage of all occupied and unoccupied rooms.
  • 90% of our cleaning products are Green Seal certified.
  • Rated 4 keys with Green Key Global.
  • Upgraded the majority of our kitchen equipment to energy-efficient equipment in 2022.
  • In-room mini-bar water bottles switched to aluminum products. We saved over 6796 plastic bottles going to our landfills in 2022.
  • All plastic beverage products in our coffee shop have been replaced with aluminum or glass products.
  • Employee discount incentive on coffee purchases in the coffee shop when using a reusable mug.
  • Hotel green incentive for room cleaning. Guests who opt to skip housekeeping services and receive food and beverage discounts.
  • Improved and streamlined our current recycling program.
  • Removal of plastic pens and paper pads for banquet meeting set-ups (provided by request only).
  • Installation of 9 electric car charging stations.
  • Air is redirected from internal vents to efficiently heat our parkade and offset the need for a direct heat source.
  • Free library for guest book exchange (leave a book, take a book) implemented in 2022.

Future Sustainability Initiatives

We are working on the following sustainable initiatives, which we plan to introduce in the near future.

  • Upgrading light switches to motion sensors in storage areas.
  • Upgrading light bulbs to energy-efficient LED bulbs throughout the hotel.
  • Working with suppliers to provide eco-friendly products and supplies.
